It’s been a chilly week in Tatebayashi, but it’s nothing compared to Kansas City this weekend! In Tatebayashi, the coldest it gets is around -1 Celsius, or 30 Fahrenheit; right now in KC, it’s -13 Celsius, 8 Fahrenheit! It’s always hard for me to answer when someone asks me whether KC is colder than Tatebayashi. In KC, the weather is colder, but the houses are well-insulated and most people have cars for transportation. In Tatebayashi, the weather is warmer, but our apartment has zero insulation, and I ride my bike everywhere. I’ve actually had trouble getting to sleep a few nights this week because our apartment’s been so cold!
But anyways! To my friends and family back in the States dealing with this cold snap, please stay safe and warm!
On with the pictures!
This week’s letter was V. I write the words on the board and a few kids will copy them. This kid must have been sitting in the back – I thought this was the cutest spelling mistake!
On Thursday night our friend Shizuka had us over for dinner at her parents’ house! The food was absolutely amazing – karaage (fried chicken), grilled vegetables and seafood, tsukemono (pickled vegetables), yams and ground chicken…so delicious!
I’ve seen many a shirt bearing strange English. Here’s one from this week:
There’s a beautiful shrine right next to one of my schools. The first picture I took this week; the second I took last summer, from the opposite end.
On Saturday afternoon we went with our friend Kayla to the concert hall next to City Hall to see a performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony (the one with the famous Ode to Joy)! The four soloists were absolutely amazing. My friend Yumiko was in the choir, and she got us tickets! They also had the Tatebayashi children’s choir as well as middle school singers. A lot of them were or had been my students! They didn’t make the kids stand through the first and second movements, but the poor things had to come out and stand for over forty minutes through the third and fourth movements, and only sang at the very end.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a classical concert!
After the concert we went to eat crepes and ramen (I’ll make a post about that later).
And that’s that! This week was a lovely week. We’ve only got one more week before winter break starts, and then the week after next, we’ll be going to Korea for several days! 楽しみだ！
